I am getting the same error message when I send a message.
I already tried changing to a default template.
I see this in my logs:
[Mon Feb 07 14:44:01 2011] [error] [client 72.26.208.51] File does not exist: /path/401.shtml

Just some background information:
I do not use an integration with jomsocial, CB or K2.
As a test I created an almost empty message with a default template. Sending this message creates the same error message.

SOLVED
Shame on me: I should have searched the forum better. The administrator directory was password protected. After disabling this sending works again flawlesly.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how to password protect the admin area of Joomla and at the same time have Joomailer functioning?

I've seen this answer in the solutions somewhere. You can copy the archive folder from administrator/components/com_joomlamailerintegration/archive to the root. change the rights of this folder to read/write and finally change the path to the archive in the parameters. Now you can have the admin dir pw protected.
